With ideal running conditions on hand, there were more participants than blackflies for the 21st annual Cobscook Bay 10K/5K for Down East Hospice. The overall winner of the 10K event, Judson Cake of Ellsworth, trimmed his own course record, set back in 2008, with a blistering 32:59. Local favorite Austin Townsend, Jr., ran a respectable 40:12 for third place. This year’s 10K participants ranged in age between 8 and 73 years young.

The Cobscook Bay race for Down East Hospice features a one-mile Fun Run for children ages ten and younger; the 5K run/walk; and a nationally certified 10K run/walk—among New England’s most scenic race courses. The 10K finishes at Pembroke’s Reversing Falls Park, where participants enjoy a post-race picnic with fresh salmon, barbeque fare, and potluck items.

Down East Hospice is the only all-volunteer program offering cost-free comfort care for the terminally ill, the grieving, and their families throughout Washington County, Maine. This event is a community-wide effort that brings together a diverse group of individuals—giving their time and goodwill for a good cause.
